Reduce Your Diabetes Risk with Dairy During National Diabetes Month

Type II diabetes is the most common type of diabetes and appears most frequently in adults but it increasingly found in children too; it is responsible for about 200,000 deaths every year. Research shows that consuming at least 3 servings of dairy foods per day may aid in lowering the risk for type 2 diabetes and heart disease too!

Suggestion: Have a serving (8-ounces) of Crowley Fat Free or Low Fat Milk at EVERY MEAL! This will ensure that by the end of the day you have reached your 3 serving goal.

Pumpkin Spice Dip

Great for the holidays!
Servings: 6
Calories Per Serving: 70

INGREDIENTS
1 cup Crowley Lowfat Cottage Cheese
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 Tablespoons pumpkin (canned or fresh pureed)
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon all spice
Apples (sliced)

Place all of the ingredients (except the apples) in a food processor or blender and blend until smooth.

Slice apples and serve!

Serving suggestion: Scoop out the inside of an apple and use it as a serving dish, as pictured above.

Creamy Pumpkin Soup

Quick and Easy!
Servings: 6
Calories Per Serving: 120

INGREDIENTS
16 ounces pumpkin (canned or fresh pureed)
14 oz chicken broth (no added salt)
1 large onion (diced)
2 carrots (diced)
2 cups Crowley Fat Free Half & Half
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1/3 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup Crowley Light Sour Cream (for serving)

In a large pot combine: chicken broth, onions, carrots, baking soda, salt, and pepper, simmer uncovered for about 15 minutes, until carrots are tender.

Stir in pumpkin and half & half. Simmer uncovered for 10 minutes.

Ladle into soup bowls and top with sour cream!

Garlic Mashed Potatoes

Crowley Style
Servings: 8
Calories Per Serving: 80

INGREDIENTS
4 medium potatoes
1 cup Crowley Lowfat Plain Yogurt
6 Tablespoons Crowley Fat Free Half & Half
3 Tablespoons Crowley Light Sour Cream
1 1/2 Tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon garlic powder (or more, to taste)
salt and pepper to taste

Scrub potatoes well, chop into quarters, place into a pot and cover with water. Cook over medium heat until tender. Drain the water.

Add yogurt, half & half, sour cream, butter, and garlic powder to the potatoes and mash until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Check out the nutrition savings compared to traditional mashed potato recipes. you save about 19 grams of total fat, 12.5 grams of saturated fat, and 830 mg of sodium per serving!
