April 2007

Curb Your Cancer Risk

Chances are that you know someone who has battled cancer. During the month of April is the perfect time to take active steps for cancer prevention for you and your family, it's National Cancer Control Month!

The American Cancer Society estimates that one-third of all cancer deaths in 2007 will be related to overweight or obesity, physical inactivity, and nutrition. The good news is that there are steps you can take that may prevent various types of cancer. Try making these lifestyle changes to reduce you and your family's cancer risk.

Fill Your Shopping Cart with Color
The nutrients and antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables are loaded with cancer fighting power. A lot of the benefits from fruits and vegetables come from their vibrant colors! This is the reason it is so important to select a variety of fruits and vegetables, this will offer your body a range of health helping benefits.

Tips: Next time you are grocery shopping, before you leave the product section check your cart and make sure you have a rainbow of colors from fruits and vegetables! If not, head back to the produce section and pick-up your missing colors!

If you're shopping for one or two, rely on frozen vegetables and fruit to help finish your rainbow of colors! Choose frozen vegetables and fruit without added sauces and syrups and they'll be a great addition to your daily intake and last longer than fresh produce.

Dish up the Dairy
Are you getting at least three lowfat servings of Crowley everyday? Dairy foods offer nutrients that are linked to decreased cancer risk. Vitamin D has been found to have an antitumor effect and studies link higher diary food intake in women to reduced breast cancer risk!

It's easy to get three servings of lowfat dairy per day, here is an example. give it a try!

Breakfast: 1 cup of Crowley Milk
Lunch: 8 oz of Lowfat Yogurt
Snack: 1 cup of Crowley 1% Lowfat Chocolate Milk
TOTAL: 3 servings of Lowfat Crowley

Control Your Weight
There is a direct link between weight and certain types of cancer, specifically: breast, colon, kidney, cervical, and other cancers.

We encourage you to make little changes over time to improve your weight, this way the weight will be more likely to stay off. Review January's article for ideas and get started today!

Get Active
Life is busy and it can be difficult to make the time for exercise but make it a priority and your health can benefit. Increasing your activity can keep your heart healthy and cut down your cancer risk too. Staying active can decrease your risk for the following types of cancer: breast, colon, uterus, and prostate.

Start simple. park your car at the back of the parking lot, take a walk at lunch with coworkers or friends, walk your dog, rent an exercise DVD, and use stairs instead of the elevator. Remember, every little bit of exercise counts!
